Strategic Communications Consultant Job Posting
The Ohio Poverty Law Center (OPLC) seeks a consultant to work on a contract basis to lead its communications, media, and public relations efforts. The position will include developing and implementing targeted and effective media campaigns to support OPLC’s statewide poverty law advocacy work as well as providing training and leadership to OPLC staff and others to develop messages, promote poverty law issues, and communicate effectively with the public about OPLC’s work. The position will also include updating and improving content on OPLC’s website, www.ohiopovertylaw.org, managing OPLC’s monthly email newsletter, updating OPLC’s Facebook page and Twitter feeds, and working with OPLC staff to develop and implement short and long-term plans for strategic communication.
The Ohio Poverty Law Center (OPLC) is a non-profit legal aid program located in Columbus and dedicated to using the law to fight poverty in Ohio. OPLC does statewide systemic policy advocacy on poverty law issues and is the state support center for the legal aid community in Ohio. OPLC has a staff of seven lawyers. Its work addresses a broad range of poverty law issues, including housing, health law, family law and domestic violence, public benefits, education law, consumer and foreclosure law, and prisoner re-entry. OPLC does not generally handle individual legal cases but focuses instead on developing creative systemic solutions to legal problems facing low-income Ohioans. As the state support center for Ohio’s six direct service legal aid programs, OPLC coordinates trainings and statewide task forces, provides litigation support and specialty expertise, and publishes multiple poverty law publications and manages the content of the statewide legal services website, www.ohiolegalservices.org.
The consultant should have experience working with the media and be able to direct OPLC’s efforts to use the media as an advocacy tool and to educate the public and policymakers about poverty law issues. The consultant should also be an excellent researcher and writer, be familiar with or willing to learn about poverty law, and be outgoing and able to work on a broad range of issues. Candidates who have experience with journalism, public relations, advocacy, and other communications work are preferred. Prior experience with a legal aid program or allied organization is a plus. The position will start as a 10-15 hour per week commitment in our office in Columbus. The time commitment may ebb and flow and/or grow over time depending on staff and communication needs. The position will pay $20-25 per hour, depending on experience.
